Well..it's been a while since I've updated! Priorities definitely changed when Kelsey arrived. I've been a bit tired (as you can imagine) and updating the blog is a lot of effort when you can't keep your eyes open! Anyways - lets go through the last few weeks...
John and I arrived at the hospital on July 7th to be induced. Short story goes like this...I was in labor for 24 hours, pushed for about 5 and finally delivered a 10 pound 5 ounce baby at 5:23 am on July 8, 2009. 07/08/09 - that won't be a hard one to remember. Talk about exhausting! I had no idea my labor would progress so slowly, but if you remember, my cervix was still very high and I was only 50% effaced and 1 cm dilated when I started my induction. I put off the epidural for as long as possible, but after 3 hours of horrible cramping, I gave in and accepted the goodness the epidural had to offer! It was amazing how different I felt after they stuck me. I remember sitting in the bed, watching Wedding Crashers, thinking "Wow...this isn't going to be so bad!" Boy did I eat those words later on!! :) Anyways - everyone in the hospital room was stunned when she finally arrived. My doctor told me if she would have known she was this large we would have done a c-section. (For this reason, I am very happy we didn't know her weight). We had to use the vacuum to get her out and in my mom's words "It looked like a tug of war between Dr. Westmoreland and Kelsey!" haha..I had no idea because my eyes were closed and I was pushing as hard as I could. John was absolutely amazing during the whole process. It was so awesome to have such a strong, motivating person to turn too, because let me tell you, labor is an extremely emotional event! He was there to calm me when I start crying and give me words of encouragement when I didn't think I had any energy left in me! I am so blessed with a wonderful husband, and now an amazing family!
Kelsey was sent to the NICU after the delivery because she had low blood sugar. The doctors said between the fluid that she had suchioned out of her lungs, the hours in the birth canal, and the cutting of the ambilical cord, her body may have been stressed out and that's what lowered her sugar level. She stayed there for about 24 hours. I got up every 3 hours throughout the night to go down and feed her because it was really important to me that she was breastfed and not formula fed. She has done a great job with feeding, which I am very thankful for! On Thursday she was allowed to come back into our hospital room and we were finally able to enjoy some quality family time, just the 3 of us. We were released from the hospital on Friday, came home, and let reality sink in! It felt so unreal to be parents!
Since then, we've been adapting to our lack-of-sleep and have enjoyed getting to know Kelsey. Let me tell you...the girl has a set of lungs. She goes from 0 to 100 in no time. We'll be sitting around and she's silent, then in a split second she's screaming at the top of her lungs! There really isn't that much middle ground with her. She's been sleeping pretty well at night (minus last night where she probably slept about 2 hours), and we've been taking good naps together while Daddy is at work. I just love her to death! She makes the funniest faces when she naps - she must have some vivid dreams already! She wimpers and cries in her sleep, then turns her frown into a smile and sighs loudly. It's so adorable! I now see exactly what movements she was doing in my tummy as well. I think she could be a black belt in karate with the way she punches and kicks all day. I love, love, love her wake time during the day. She has the prettiest eyes and is so fun to interact with. Overall, I think her best feature has got to be those cheeks!!
Here are a few pictures from the first two weeks...I promise I'll try to stay more on top of my game and update the blog more frequently. Until then...enjoy our little Kelsey Ann!
